How to get cited by Google AI Overviews in the UK
AI Overviews sit above the results you already compete in. Getting cited is mostly classic local SEO, aimed at a passage rather than a page.
First, a disclosure. Our own check samples ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. It does not sample Google AI Overviews. We would rather say that plainly at the top of an article about them than let you assume otherwise from the fact that we published one.
We publish this anyway because AI Overviews are probably affecting your business more than any of the four we do measure — they appear above results your customers were already going to see, so nobody has to adopt a new habit to encounter one. And because the work that earns a citation in an Overview is largely the work that earns one in Gemini, which we do measure: both are grounded in Google's index.
What it actually is
An AI Overview is a generated summary shown above the ordinary results, assembled from pages in Google's index and displaying links to the sources it drew on. It is grounded in the same index that produces the blue links beneath it, which is why the strongest predictor of appearing in one is being retrievable and credible in ordinary Google Search.
It is not a separate index you can submit to. There is no AI Overviews console, no submission form, and nothing anyone can sell you access to.
What being cited is worth
Two things are true at once, and both matter.
Being cited puts your name above every organic result, in a context that reads as an answer rather than an advert. That is valuable.
But an Overview can also answer the question so completely that nobody clicks anything. For an informational query — "what does an MOT check" — that is a real risk to your traffic. For a commercial one — "who should I call for an emergency MOT in Leeds" — the customer still has to choose a business, and being one of the named ones is the whole game.
Which is why citation and being named as the answer are worth tracking apart. Being cited as a source for a fact while three competitors are the ones named for the job looks like success in a rank tracker and produces nothing in your inbox.
What actually helps
Everything that makes you visible in Google Search. Crawlable pages, a site that loads, content that is legible without JavaScript, a Google Business Profile that matches your website, and consistent details across the listings that mention you. This is not a workaround for Overviews — it is the input to them.
Passage-level clarity. Overviews quote parts of pages. A section that answers one question, completely, under a heading that matches how the question gets asked, is the unit being selected. A comprehensive page with the answer buried in paragraph nine is competing badly against a page that says it in the first line.
Genuine specificity. Coverage areas, prices or ranges, timescales, what is included. Vagueness is not neutral here; it makes you unquotable.
Being unmistakably UK. Postcodes, county, towns covered, and "UK" in the text. Shared place names produce genuinely wrong results — we have measured a US firm cited for a query explicitly about a UK city.
Structured data that agrees with the page. LocalBusiness markup helps, but markup contradicting your visible content is worse than none. Grounded systems are choosing between competing claims about you, and contradicting yourself is an argument against your own credibility.
The sequence
- Confirm you are crawlable and readable without JavaScript.
- Fix your Google Business Profile: categories, service area, hours, working website link.
- Make your name, address and phone identical across every listing.
- Rewrite your highest-intent pages so each question is answered directly, under a heading matching the question.
- Add
LocalBusinessstructured data that matches what the page says. - Get mentioned by the local sources Google already trusts for your trade.
- Measure, change one thing, measure again.
What not to bother with
- Paying for "AI Overview optimisation" as a distinct service. There is no separate channel. If a proposal cannot be described as work on retrievability, clarity, consistency or third-party mentions, ask what it actually is.
- Any guarantee of appearing. Overviews do not appear for every query, they change, and nobody outside Google decides who is cited.
- Chasing informational queries you cannot monetise. Being cited for "what is a boiler service" is not the same asset as being recommended for "who services boilers in Sheffield".
