Straight answers about what this measures

Including the ones with awkward answers. If a question you have is not here, email info@airanker.co.uk.

What does the free check actually do?

It asks four AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity — three commercial questions about your trade in your area, records what each one answered, and keeps the sources each answer cited. You see whether you were mentioned, whether your site was cited, and every source the engines trusted to build their answers. It takes about a minute and needs no card.

Is it really free? What is the catch?

It is free and there is no card. It costs us real money in vendor fees per run, so there is a daily cap on free checks and a limit per website. We hope you buy the full report or the monitoring, but nothing is withheld from the free result to force that.

Why UK only?

Because a check we cannot do properly is worse than no check. Answers vary by country, our question phrasing is written for UK search behaviour, and we verify whether cited sources actually serve the UK. Rather than return a plausible-looking result for a country we have not validated, we refuse non-UK locations at submission.

How is this different from Ahrefs, Semrush or a rank tracker?

Those measure where you appear in a list of links. This measures whether a business is named in a generated answer, which is a different question with a different winner set — an AI answer names three or four businesses, and there is no page two. Most of what makes a page rank still helps; the measurement is what changed.

How often do AI answers change?

Often, and without notice. That is why we keep every answer we record and treat a single reading as a snapshot. Some of the movement you will see between checks is the engine, not you, which is precisely why a before-and-after on the same questions matters more than any single score.

Can you guarantee I will be recommended?

No, and you should not believe anyone who does. We do not control the engines. What we can guarantee is the evidence: every number we report traces back to a stored answer you can read, and where we could not measure something we show a dash rather than a zero.

What data do you store, and for how long?

The questions asked, the answers returned, the sources cited, and the business details you gave us. Retention is documented in our privacy notice. We do not sell it, and we do not publish anything identifying a customer without written consent.

What is a citation, and how is it different from a mention?

A mention means the engine named your business somewhere in the answer. A citation means your page was listed as a source it drew on. They move independently — you can be cited as a source for a fact while other businesses are the ones named as the answer — so we record them separately. Two things we do NOT do: we do not score "was this business recommended" as its own measurement, and we do not discover who your competitors are. On a monitored subject we track share of voice against competitors you name yourself.

What do I do with the list of sources?

It is a target list. Those pages are already trusted by the engines for your service in your area, so a mention on one of them is worth more than most work on your own site. We rank them by how often they appear, and we withhold any source we have not established actually serves the UK.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

No major engine has committed to using llms.txt, so nobody can honestly promise it will get you cited. It costs nothing to publish and can do no harm — we publish one. Treat it as cheap optionality, not a ranking factor, and be sceptical of anyone selling it as one.

Why does a score sometimes show a dash instead of a number?

Because we could not get a usable reading. Zero means we asked and you were nowhere; a dash means the measurement itself failed. Printing the second as the first would invent a bad result we never observed.

Can I use this for my clients?

Yes. Client workspaces, recurring checks per client, and generated reports are what the agency side exists for. Each client is separated, and reports carry the evidence behind every number so you can defend them in a meeting.
